Advanced Youth Lathe Turning
This class is with students with at least 3-4 previous sessions of lathe. Students with 3 or 4 may choose Beginner or Advanced Lathe depending on their comfort and desired progression.
Students in Advanced Lathe turning are expected to know and follow all safety protocols, use proper mounting, and have a solid understanding of tool use. The advanced class will provide students with the opportunity to refine their techniques in whatever disciplines they like and a chance to try more advanced turning techniques and forms. Students will generally take the lead in determining what projects they wish to try.
This class will also offer any interested students the chance to learn how to create and then turn their own segmented bowl. This will be done on the second half of the semester and is optional, but a great opportunity to anyone interested in learning.
Other advanced topics (and examples) that can be explored are end grain hollowing (boxes, goblets, advanced birdhouses), air turning (square bowls, live edge bowls), off-center turning (small bowls or spindles) and precision kits (pepper mills, grinders, advanced ornaments, epoxy pens).
Basic woods and generously donated woods will be available to use but students are also encouraged to bring in their own woods/logs if they have them to also start learning how to create their own blanks.
Safety is covered as an essential element of the class.
Requirements: Student must meet all requirements to be enrolled in the Greenville Woodworkers Guild (GWG) Youth Woodworking Program and have been duly enrolled therein. All papers relating to injury, liability, safety and parental responsibility must have been duly executed. Safety: A face shield is mandatory and will be provided in the class. Closed toes shoes are required.
